Unit 123 To/at/in/into

  A

  • go/come/travel 등 + to + 장소 또는 행사 = 향하는 방향을 나타내는 to:
    go to China go to bed come to my house
    go back to Italy go to the bank be taken to the hospital
    return to Boston go to a concert be sent to prison
    welcome (somebody) to (a place) drive to the airport
    • When are your friends going back to Italy? (not going back in Italy)
    • Three people were injured in the accident and taken to the hospital.
    • Welcome to our country! (not Welcome in)
  • 위와 같이 a trip to / a visit to / on my way to . . . 등으로 방향을 표현:
    • Did you enjoy your trip to Paris / your visit to the zoo?
  • 움직임을 나타내는 to 와 위치를 나타내는 in/at 의 비교:
    • They are going to France.  but  They live in France.
    • Can you come to the party?  but  I’ll see you at the party.

  B     Been to

  • been to + (장소) = visited, …에 가봤다.
    • I’ve been to Italy four times, but I’ve never been to Rome.
    • Ann has never been to a hockey game in her life.

  C     Get and arrive

  • get to + (장소) = …에 도착하다.
    • What time did they get to London / get to work / get to the party / get to the hotel?
  • 반면에 arrive in . . . / arrive at . . . (not arrive to) 입니다.
    arrive in a town or country = (나라/도시) …에 도착하다.
    • They arrived in Rio de Janeiro / in Brazil a week ago.
  • arrive at = (빌딩 등의 장소나 행사) …에 도착하다.
    • What time did they arrive at the hotel / at the airport / at the party?

  D     Home

  • 전치사 to 를 사용하지 않고 go home / come home / get home / arrive home / on the way home 등으로 사용하고, “to home” 이라고 하지 않습니다.
    • I’m tired. Let’s go home now. (not go to home)
    • I met Linda on my way home. (not way to home)

  E     Into

  • go into / get into . . . 등 = enter (a room / a building / a car, etc.):
    • I opened the door, went into the room, and sat down.
    • A bird flew into the kitchen through the window.
  • go/get/put 등의 일부 동사는 into 대신에 in 을 주로 사용합니다.
    • She got in the car and drove away. (or She got into the car . . .)
    • I read the letter and put it back in the envelope.
  • into 의 반대어는 out of 입니다.
    • She got out of the car and went into a shop.
  • (탈 것을) 타고 내리는 표현은 get on/off a bus / a train / a plane (not usually get into/out of):
    • She got on the bus and I never saw her again.
