• 일반적인 사람이나 사물을 말할 때(총칭)는 the 를 사용하지 않습니다.
  • I’m afraid of dogs.¹ (not the dogs) (dogs = 특정한 종류가 아닌 전체의 dogs)
  • Doctors are paid more than teachers.¹
  • Do you collect stamps?¹
  • Crime is a problem in most big cities. (not The crime)
  • Life has changed a lot in the last 30 years. (not the life)
  • Do you like classical music / Chinese food / fast cars?
  • My favorite sport is football/skiing/hockey.
  • My favorite subject at school was history/physics/English.
• most² people / most books / most cars, etc. (not the most . . .):
  • Most hotels accept credit cards. (not The most hotels)

 § ¹ 대표복수: 관사없이 일반명사의 복수형을 사용해서 종족/종류 전체를 나타냅니다.
 § ² 관사없이 “대개의, 대부분의”

• 특정한 사람이나 사물에는 the 를 사용합니다. 비교:

  In general (without the)	Specific people or things (with the)
  Children learn from playing. (= children in general)	We took the children to the zoo. (= a specific group, perhaps the speaker’s children)
  I couldn’t live without music.	The movie wasn’t very good, but I liked the music. (= the music in the movie)
  All cars have wheels.	All the cars in this parking lot belong to the people who work here.
  Sugar isn’t very good for you.	Can you pass the sugar, please? (= the sugar on the table)
  Do Americans drink much tea? (= Americans in general)	Do the Americans you know drink tea? (= only the Americans you know, not Americans in general)

  C

• 일반적인 것과 특정한 것의 구별이 확실하지 않은 경우도 있습니다. 비교:

  In general (without the)	Specific people or things (with the)
  I like working with people. (= people in general) I like working with people who are lively.³ (모든 people 은 아니지만 lively 한 사람들은 여전히 일반적)	I like the people I work with. (= a specific group of people)
  Do you like coffee? (= coffee in general) Do you like strong black coffee?³ (모든 coffee 는 아니지만 strong black 커피는 여전히 일반적)	Did you like the coffee we had after dinner last night? (= specific coffee)

 § ³ lively, strong 등 구별이 분명하지 않거나 주관적인 형용사를 사용하면 특정한 사람·사물이 아닙니다.
