• 다음의 예를 보겠습니다.

  The giraffe is the tallest of all animals. The bicycle is an excellent means of transportation. When was the telephone invented? The dollar is the currency (= the money) of the United States.

• 위의 예에서 the . . . 는 특정한 것을 의미하지 않습니다. the giraffe¹ 는 한마리의 특정한 기린을 나타내는 것이 아니라 기린 전체 종족을 의미합니다. the (+ 단수가산명사)를 사용해서 동물이나 기계 등의 전체의 속성·기능을 표현합니다.
  악기에 the 를 사용합니다.
  • Can you play the guitar?
  • The piano is my favorite instrument.
• a 와 the 의 비교:
  • I’d like to have a piano.  but  I can’t play the piano.
  • We saw a giraffe at the zoo.  but  The giraffe is my favorite animal.
• 인류를 뜻하는 man 의 경우 the 를 사용하지 않습니다.
  • What do you know about the origins of man? (not the man)

 § ¹ a + 단수가산명사, the + 단수가산명사 두가지의 대표단수는 종족을 대표하는 표현이며 차이는 거의 없습니다.

  B     The + adjective

• the + 형용사 = 형용사 + people: 명사를 사용하지 않고 the + 형용사 형태만으로 형용사에 해당하는 사람들을 표현합니다.

  the young the old the elderly

  the rich the poor the homeless

  the sick the disabled the unemployed

  the blind the deaf

  the injured the dead

• the young = young people, the rich = rich people, etc.:
  • Do you think the rich should pay higher taxes?
  • The government has promised to provide more money to help the homeless.
• 이 표현은 의미상 항상 복수(plural)입니다. 단수형은 “a young” 이나 “the injured” 가 아니고 “a young person,” “the injured woman” 등의 형태입니다.
  반드시 “the poor” (not the poors), “the young” (not the youngs) 등의 형태로 사용하는 표현입니다.

  C     The + nationality

• the + -ch, -sh 로 끝나는 고유형용사 형태로 (the French / the English / the Spanish, etc.) 그 나라 국민들을 표현합니다.
  • The French are famous for their food. (= the people of France)
• the French / the English 등은 의미상 복수(plural)입니다. 단수형은 “a French / an English” 가 아니고 a Frenchman / an Englishwoman 등의 형태입니다.
  the + -ese 로 끝나는 고유형용사 형태도 있습니다. (the Chinese / the Sudanese / the Japanese, etc.)
  • The Chinese invented printing.
• 그러나 이런 경우는 단수형도 가능합니다. (a Japanese, a Sudanese, a Vietnamese, etc.)
  또한 a Swiss (단수), the Swiss (복수, 스위스 국민들)도 있습니다.
  그 밖의 고유형용사는 -s 로 복수형을 사용합니다.
      an Italian → Italians     a Mexican → Mexicans     a Thai → Thais
  이런 경우 (Italians, etc.) 일반적인 국민들을 표현할 때 the 를 사용하지 않습니다. (Unit 73 참조)
