• 도로·광장·공원 등의 이름에는 the 를 사용하지 않습니다.
      Union Street (not the . . .)    Fifth Avenue    Central Park
      Wilshire Boulevard    Broadway    Times Square
  공항·역·대학 등의 주요 건물·학교 이름이 두개의 단어인 경우가 많습니다:
      Kennedy Airport    Cambridge University
  첫단어가 사람(Kennedy)이거나 장소(Cambridge)입니다. 이런 경우 the 를 주로 사용하지 않습니다.
      Penn Station (not the . . .)    Boston University    Carnegie Hall
      Lincoln Center    Buckingham Palace
  비교:
      Buckingham Palace (not the . . .)    but    the Royal Palace
      (“Royal” 은 “Buckingham” 처럼 이름이 아니고 형용사이기 때문에 the 를 사용합니다.)

• A 의 경우를 제외한 대부분의 빌딩/건물 이름에는 the 를 사용합니다.

  비교:
      the University of Michigan  but  Michigan State University (without the)

 § the Bank of Korea 가 맞습니다. Bank of Korea 가 아닙니다.

• 상점·식당·호텔·은행 등이 설립자의 이름을 따서 지어진 -’s 나 -s 인 이름, the 를 사용하지 않습니다.
      Joe’s Diner    McDonald’s    Macy’s (department store)
  성자의 이름을 딴 교회, the 를 사용하지 않습니다.
      St. John’s Church (not the St. John’s Church)    St. Patricks Cathedral

• the 가 신문이나 회사(단체) 이름의 한 부분인 경우:

  Newspapers Organizations

  the Washington Post, the Financial Times, the Tribune the European Union, the BBC, the Red Cross

• 회사·항공사의 이름, 주로 the 를 사용하지 않습니다.
