  A

• 두개의 명사를 조합(명사 + 명사)해서 하나의 물건·사람·생각 등을 나타낼 수 있습니다.
      a tennis ball    a bank manager    a car accident
      income tax    the water temperature
  복합명사에서 첫번째의 명사는 형용사의 역할을 하고, 물건·사람·생각 등의 종류를 나타냅니다.

  a tennis ball = a ball used to play tennis a car accident = an accident that happens while driving a car income tax = tax that you pay on your income the water temperature = the temperature of the water a Boston doctor = a doctor from Boston my life story = the story of my life

• 예:
      a television camera    a television program    a television studio    a television producer
      (television 과 관계가 있는 사람·사물입니다)
      language problems    marriage problems    health problems    work problems
      (problems 의 여러가지 종류입니다)
  비교:
      garden vegetables (= vegetables that are grown in a garden)
      a vegetable garden (= a garden where vegetables are grown)
  앞의 단어가 용도를 나타내는 -ing 형태의 복합명사도 있습니다.
      a frying pan (a pan for frying)    a sleeping bag    a swimming pool    a dining room
  세개의 명사로 구성된 복합명사도 있습니다.
  • I waited at the hotel reception desk.
  • We watched the World Swimming Championships on television.
  • Everyone is talking about the government corruption scandal.

 § 현재분사와 동명사의 차이점:
   a sleeping baby : 잠을 자고 있는 (현재분사) - baby 의 상태입니다.
   a sleeping car : 잠을 자기 위한 (동명사) - car 의 용도입니다.

  B

• 복합명사를 하나의 단어로 붙여서 쓰는 경우도 있고, 그렇지 않은 경우도 있습니다.
      a headache    toothpaste    a weekend    pea soup    a road sign
  이와 같은 단어에는 정해진 규칙이 없습니다. 확실하지 않은 경우에는 띄어서 쓰는 편이 좋습니다.

  C

• 비교:
      a sugar bowl (perhaps empty) and a bowl of sugar (= a bowl with sugar in it)
      a toolbox (the box may be empty) and a box of tools (= a box full of tools)

  D

• 복합명사의 첫번째 단어는 형용사의 역할을 합니다. 의미가 복수인 경우에도 단수형을 사용합니다. 예를 들어서 a bookstore 는 books 를 살 수 있는 a store 이고, an apple tree 는 apples 가 열리는 a tree 입니다. 그와 마찬가지로 :
      a three-hour trip (not three-hours trip)    two 14-year-old girls (not years)
      a 10-dollar bill (not dollars)    a six-page letter (not pages)
      a four-week English course (not weeks)    a two-story house (not stories)
  비교:
  • It was a three-hour trip.   but   The trip took three hours.
