• Unit 90 의 예문을 보겠습니다.

  The woman who lives next door is a doctor. (or The woman that lives . . .)            The woman lives next door.     who = the woman, 주어(subject) Where is the cheese that was in the refrigerator? (or the cheese which was . . .)                      The cheese was in the refrigerator.     that = the cheese, 주어(subject)

• 주격 관계대명사 who/that/which 는 생략할 수 없습니다. “The woman lives next door is a doctor” 또는 “Where is the cheese was in the refrigerator?” 라고 할 수 없습니다.

• 목적격 관계대명사 who/that/which:

  The woman who I wanted to see was away on vacation.                          I wanted to see the woman.    who = the woman, 목적어(object); I = 주어 Have you found the keys that you lost?                                             You lost the keys.    that = the keys, 목적어(object); You = 주어

• 목적격 관계대명사 who/that/which 는 생략할 수 있습니다.
  • The woman I wanted to see was away.  or  The woman who I wanted to see . . .
  • Have you found the keys you lost?  or  . . . the keys that you lost?
  • The dress Ann bought doesn’t fit her very well.  or  The dress that Ann bought . . .
  • Is there anything I can do?  or  . . . anything that I can do?
• 주의:
      the keys you lost (not the keys you lost them)
      the dress Ann bought (not the dress Ann bought it)

• 전치사 (in/to/for, etc.)와 함께 사용하는 관계대명사.

  Tom is talking to a woman – do you know her? → Do you know the woman (who/that) Tom is talking to?      I slept in a bed last night – it wasn’t very comfortable → The bed (that/which) I slept in last night wasn’t very comfortable.

  • Are these the books you were looking for?  or  . . . the books that/which you were . . .¹
  • The woman he fell in love with left him after a month.  or  The woman who/that he . . .²
  • The man I was sitting next to on the plane talked all the time.  or  The man who/that I was . . .³
• 주의:
      the books you were looking for (not the books you were looking for them)

 § 전치사가 관계대명사 앞에 위치하는 경우, 관계대명사를 생략할 수 없으며 that 를 사용할 수 없습니다:
  ¹ or . . . the books for which you were . . .
  ² or . . . The woman with whom he . . .
  ³ or . . . the man to whom I was . . .

• 관계대명사 what 는 다음과 같이 사용할 수 없습니다. (Unit 90C 참조)
  • Everything (that) they said was true. (not Everything what they said)
  • I gave her all the money (that) I had. (not all the money what I had)
• what = “the thing(s) that”:
  • Did you hear what they said? (= the things that they said)
