Unit 107 Word Order 2: Adverbs with the Verb

  A

  • always/also/probably 등의 부사(adverb)는 동사와 함께 문장의 중간에 사용합니다.
    • Helen always drives to work.
    • We were feeling very tired, and we were also hungry.
    • The concert will probably be canceled.

  B

  • 문장의 중간에 들어가는 부사 위치의 규칙 (일반적인 규칙이므로 예외가 있습니다):
    (1) drives/fell/cooked 등의 동사처럼 한단어로 된 동사의 경우 부사는 주로 동사 앞에 위치합니다.

    • I cleaned the house and also cooked dinner. (not cooked also)
    • Lucy hardly ever watches television and rarely reads newspapers.
    • “Should I give you my address?”  “No, I already have it.”
  • 이런 부사 (always/often/also, etc.)는 have to . . . 의 앞에 위치합니다.
    • Joe never calls me. I always have to call him. (not I have always to call)
  • (2) 부사는 be 동사 (am/is/are/was/were)의 다음에 위치합니다.
    • We were feeling very tired, and we were also hungry.
    • Why are you always late? You’re never on time.
    • The traffic isn’t usually as bad as it was this morning.
  • (3) 두 개 혹은 그 이상의 동사 (can remember / doesn’t eat / will be canceled, etc.)가 있으면 부사는 첫 번째 동사(can/doesn’t/will, etc.)의 뒤에 위치합니다.

    • You have always been very kind to me.
    • Jack can’t cook. He can’t even boil an egg.
    • Do you still work for the same company?
    • The house was only built a year ago, and it’s already falling down.
  • 부사 probably 는 부정어(isn’t/won’t, etc.)의 앞에 위치합니다.
    • I probably won’t see you.   or   I will probably not see you. (not I won’t probably)

  C

  • all / both 의 위치:
    • We all felt sick after we ate. (not We felt all sick)
    • My parents are both teachers. (not My parents both are teachers)
    • Sarah and Jane have both applied for the job.
    • We are all going out tonight.

  D

  • 반복을 피하기 위하여 줄여진 문장(Unit 49 참조)에 나오는 동사(is/will/did, etc.)와 같이 사용하는 always/never 등의 위치:
    • He always says he won’t be late, but he always is. (= he is always late)
    • I’ve never done it, and I never will. (= I will never do it)
  • always/never 등의 부사는 이러한 경우에 동사의 앞에 위치합니다.
