  A     A friend of mine / a friend of Tom’s, etc.

• “a friend of mine/yours/his/hers/ours/theirs”:
  • I’m going to a wedding on Saturday. A friend of mine is getting married. (not a friend of me)
  • We took a trip with some friends of ours. (not some friends of us)
  • Michael had an argument with a neighbor of his.
  • It was a good idea of yours to go to the movies.
• 위와 같은 구조로 “a friend of my sister’s / (a friend) of Tom’s,” etc.:
  • That woman over there is a friend of my sister’s.
  • It was a good idea of Tom’s to go to the movies.

 § 이중소유격: 관사(a/an/the), this, that, some, any, no 등과 소유격을 같이 사용할 때 소유격은 of 뒤에 놓습니다

  B     My own . . . / your own . . . , etc.

• own 의 위치는 my/your/his/her/its/our/their 다음입니다.¹
      my own house    your own car    her own room
      (not an own house, an own car, etc.)
  My own . . . / your own . . . , etc. = 빌린 것이나 공유하는 것이 아닌 자신 만의 것:
  • I don’t want to share a room with anybody. I want my own room.
  • Vicky and George would like to have their own house.
  • It’s a shame that the apartment doesn’t have its own parking space.
  • It’s my own fault that I don’t have any money. I buy too many things I don’t need.
  • Why do you want to borrow my car? Why don’t you use your own²? (= your own car)
• own 으로 누군가를 시키거나 누군가에게 의존하지 않고 자신이 스스로 하는 것을 표현합니다.
  • Bill usually cuts his own hair. (= he cuts it himself; he doesn’t go to a barber)
  • I’d like to have a garden so that I could grow my own vegetables. (= grow them myself instead of buying them in stores)

 § ¹ one’s own . . . 은 남의 것이 아니라 자기 자신의 소유임을 강조하거나, 남의 도움을 빌리지 않고 자력으로 자신이 하는 주체성을 강조하는 표현입니다.
 § ² own 다음의 명사가 반복되는 경우 그 명사를 생략하고 own 을 대명사로 사용할 수 있습니다.

  C     On my own / on your own, etc.

• on one’s own = independently; 남에게 의존하지 않고, 독립적으로, 도움을 받지 않고
  • My children are living on their own. (= living in their own place and supporting themselves)
  • I traveled around Japan on my own. (= not on an organized tour)
  • Are you raising your children on your own? (= without the other parent)

  D     By myself / by yourself, etc.

• by myself / by yourself / by themselves, etc. = alone, without other people; 혼자서, 다른 사람없이.
  • I like living by myself.
  • “Did you go to Hawaii by yourself?”  “No, with a friend.”
  • Jack was sitting by himself in a corner of the café.
  • Student drivers are not allowed to drive by themselves.
