  A

• 두개 이상의 형용사(adjective)를 동시에 사용하는 경우:
  • My brother lives in a nice new house.
  • There was a beautiful large round wooden table in the kitchen.
• new/large/round/wooden 등의 형용사들은 fact (사실: 객관적)를 나타내고 신·구, 대·소, 색상등의 정보를 제공합니다.
  nice/beautiful 등의 형용사들은 opinion (의견: 주관적)을 나타내고 사람이나 사물에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지 표현합니다.
  의견을 나타내는 형용사를 사실을 나타내는 형용사보다 일반적으로 먼저 사용합니다.

• 사실을 나타내는 형용사를 두개 혹은 이상 사용하는 경우의 일반적인 어순:

• 1. 대·소 → 2. 신·구 → 3. 색상 → 4. 출신 → 5. 재료 → 명사의 순서로 사용합니다.
      a tall young man (1 → 2)          a large wooden table (1 → 5)
      big blue eyes (1 → 3)          an old Russian song (2 → 4)
      a small black plastic bag (1 → 3 → 5)          an old white cotton shirt (2 → 3 → 5)
  크기(size)와 길이(length)를 나타내는 형용사(big/small/tall/short/long, etc.)를 모양(shape)과 너비(width)를 나타내는 형용사(round/fat/thin/slim/wide, etc.)보다 먼저 사용합니다.
      a large round table     a tall thin girl     a long narrow street
  색(color)을 나타내는 형용사가 두개 또는 이상인 경우 and 와 같이 사용합니다.
      a black and white dress     a red, white, and green flag
  색을 나타내는 형용사가 아닌 경우에는 and 를 거의 사용하지 않습니다.
      a long black dress (not a long and black dress)

  C

• be/get/become/seem 등의 동사¹ 다음에 형용사를 사용합니다.
  • Be careful!
  • I’m tired and I’m getting hungry.
  • As the movie went on, it became more and more boring.
  • Your friend seems very nice.
• look/feel/sound/taste/smell 등의 지각/감각동사¹ 다음에 형용사 보어를 사용합니다.
  • You look tired. / I feel tired. / She sounds tired.
  • The dinner smells good.
  • This milk tastes a little strange.
• 동사를 수식하는 것은 부사(adverb)입니다. (Units 98–99 참조)
  • Drive carefully! (not Drive careful)
  • Susan plays the piano very well. (not plays . . . very good)

 § ¹ 불완전자동사는 보어가 필요하고, 타동사도 불완전자동사로 사용되는 경우 보어가 필요합니다.

  D

• the first two days / the next few weeks / the last 10 minutes 등:
  • I didn’t enjoy the first two days of the course. (not the two first days)
  • They’ll be away for the next few weeks. (not the few next weeks)
