- 다음의 예문을 보겠습니다.
- Our vacation was too short – the time passed very quickly.
- Two people were seriously injured in the accident.
- 위에서 quickly 와 seriously 가 부사(adverv)입니다. 부사는 형용사 + ly 의 형태가 많이 있습니다.

-ly 형태가 모두 부사는 아닙니다. -ly 형태의 형용사도 있습니다.

- 부사 혹은 형용사?
quick/careful 등의 형용사로 사람·사물등의 명사를 수식하고, 명사 앞에 사용합니다. quickly/carefully 등의 부사로 동사를 수식하고, 어떻게 무엇을 하고 어떻게 일어났는지 설명합니다. - Tom is a careful driver. (not a carefully driver)
- Tom drove carefully along the narrow road. (not drove careful)
- We didn’t go out because of the heavy rain.
- We didn’t go out because it was raining heavily. (not raining heavy)
- 비교:
- She speaks perfect English¹. (동사 + 형용사 + 명사)
- She speaks English perfectly². (동사 + 명사 + 부사)
- be 동사와 look/feel/sound 등의 동사처럼 형용사 보어가 필요한 동사가 많이 있습니다. 비교:
- Please be quiet.
- Please speak quietly.
- I was disappointed that my exam results were so bad.
- I was unhappy that I did so badly on the exam. (not did so bad)
- Why do you always look so serious?
- Why do you never take me seriously?
- I feel happy.
- The children were playing happily.
§ ¹ 명사 English 를 수식하고, perfect English 를 speak 한 경우입니다.
§ ² 동사 speak 를 수식하고, English 를 perfectly speak 한 경우입니다.

부사는 형용사와 다른 부사의 앞에 위치합니다.³
reasonably cheap (부사 + 형용사)
terribly sorry (부사 + 형용사)
incredibly quickly (부사 + 부사)- It’s a reasonably cheap restaurant, and the food is extremely good.
- Oh, I’m terribly sorry. I didn’t mean to push you. (not terrible sorry)
- Maria learns languages incredibly quickly.
- The test was surprisingly easy.
- 부사는 과거분사 (injured/organized/written, etc.)의 앞에 위치합니다.
- Two people were seriously injured in the accident. (not serious injured)
- The meeting was very badly organized.
§ ³ 부사는 동사와 형용사, 다른 부사, 그리고 문장전체를 수식할 수 있습니다.
